Is there a certain snack you like to eat while writing?

Umm…not really. It’s a little hard for me to concentrate on typing when I’m trying to eat something. I mean it’s doable, but crumbs in my keyboard are not my favorite thing ever! 😀

When do you normally write? Morning, evening, or afternoon?

This generally depends on the writing mood I’m in. Normally I’m a nighttime writer, typing like crazy from six at night to three in the morning, but there are weeklong periods where I write from early morning until early afternoon. But these are admittedly rare.

Where do you write?

Usually in my living room, curled up on the sofa or an armchair (oh how I miss my red armchair!). I like having people around me when I write, company of sorts since writing is a bit lonely, but I don’t want strangers bustling around and distracting me so coffee shops and the like are out. I like have my family sitting around me, including me even though I’m ignoring them, while they watch T.V. or a movie or something. Thankfully they’ve gotten used to the sound of the clicking keyboard in the background of anything they try to watch!

How often do you start a new novel?

I get new novel ideas whenever they decide to show up, but I try not to actually start writing any of them while I have another novel going because it’s too much for me usually to switch back and forth between stories. I get too caught up in the thrill of the new and forget the awesomeness of whatever I was already doing and it’s just not productive for me personally. Unless I just have to get something specific down, I try to limit myself to just taking very detailed notes about new stories. There have been exceptions of course, I’m writing the Ratha James story while I write Prophecy, but I consider my Ratha James one more for fun than anything else, so it’s like a writing exercise.

Do you listen to music while you write?

YES! I have a playlist for almost every story I have in my head and songs for nearly every character so I make use of those, though sometimes I just want classical pieces that have no words, just emotion, or even just musicals on repeat for noise and so I don’t have to focus on the words. Silence is not fun. But on the other hand, I have had moments where music is too much and goodness knows people love to put on my favorite shows/movies when I’m writing (distracted…me? Not at all…) so there are RARE times when silence is golden. Like holy grail rare.

What do you write on: laptop or paper?

Paper is for poetry for some reason, and quick “I just have to get this down” moments, but all the polished forms of writing and editing are done on the laptop. I can’t read my own handwriting sometimes so typing is just so much easier. And it’s way easier to edit with a delete button. And copy and paste functions.

Is there a special ritual you have before or after you write?

I try to avoid rituals because once I latch on to them I have a hard time shaking them and then it becomes a hassle, but for a long time I had to play computer solitaire before I could start writing. Mostly I just listen to music for a bit and sing like I’m performing my own sold-out concert until I’m ready to settle down and start typing.

What do you do to get into the mood to write?

Sing! I listen to music and sing (badly but with feeling lol). Sometimes I daydream, especially in the car. Then it’s a race to my laptop to write down everything I was just thinking about before it all disappears into writer limbo. Sadly some great thoughts and ideas were lost this way…

What is always near the place you write?

My family is usually around but I’m not writing at a desk or anything so there aren’t any cute, inspiring objects that I keep nearby. I do make backgrounds for my computer though, inspiring pictures and snippets of my story that I find helpful, so I guess maybe that could count!

Do you have a reward system for your word count?

No. I keep an eye on my word count for sure, to judge the day’s progress but unless we’re talking college essay writing here (where I gave myself one episode of Merlin for every paragraph I wrote…highly effective) I’m not one for a reward system.

Is there anything about your writing process others might not know about?

Well nearly everyone who knows me and has seen me writing knows I’m secretive as hell about my writing and if I even think you’re looking at my screen I will promptly tell you off (sadly I’m often wrong but you know…CONSTANT VILIGENCE!) so that’s not new. Um…let me think. I dream about a lot of my characters sometimes and I feel like whenever I watch a movie/hear a song/do anything really I have to sift through all my character’s reactions to whatever it is until I find my own, which is discombobulating at times I can assure you, but also unexpectedly hilarious. And whenever I get really into whatever I’m writing I tend to start reacting to things the way my characters would and sometimes events in our lives seem to coincide oddly. But that’s all part of living the #writerlife, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Up next for Behind the Scenes, I would like to nominate Megan from Invisible World and Juliette from Vampire Maman!

Distant Travels

Tonight I fancy a meditative stroll under the endless starlit sky in the company of the wise and elegant Elves of Middle Earth — by way of the rolling green Shire of course. With a stop for a proper pint at the Prancing Pony before heading home to be sure. 😀

Alright my lovelies, time for a blast from the past with one of my all-time favorite games…MASH! That’s right, the future-predicting phenomenon that has foretold the numerous men I am going to marry…you know, one day (though as of now I have currently married none of them, but I live for hope lol), as well as the awesome exotic locales I’m going to call home (again, nothing to show for all this oracular knowledge but I have faith) and pretty much everything in-between. I don’t know if you guys played this in school but this was the one that has stuck with me over the years and I have taught it to not only my younger brother but pretty much every younger cousin of mine as well as any friend I’ve ever had. So I figure it’s time that I bring that wonderful, suspenseful, and miraculous game to you my lovelies! Now the rules may vary depending on who you’re with, their playing preferences, and just how evil and vindictive they want to be that day, but I’m going to keep it simple. Each category gets three slots to be filled in with answers of your choice and we’ll work from there.

Now as great as this game is normally, my brother and I amped it up a notch (due to sheer boredom) and now we’ve created our own themed versions, including The Lord of the Rings/Hobbit, The Tudors, Star Wars, X-Men, Disney, Pretty Much Anything We Want At The Moment, and of course, Harry Potter! And tonight my lovelies, I’m thinking what better than the great Mr. Potter himself?! So let’s begin shall we…

Right off the bat (though you’ll see it lower on the list here, but I’m changing a few things to make it easier for us to play), choose Up or Down and pick a number between 1 and 20. That number is your Tally number. Now I choose Up and my Tally is 18, so I’m going to start from the lowest option and count up, repeating the tiers until I hit 18. Whatever option I’m on when I hit 18, that’s my future! (These are just my answers so make sure you right down your own as we go along!)

That’s right, I’m going to marry Sirius, work as a Daily Prophet Journalist, have a gold Norwegian Ridgeback for transportation and a snowy owl for a pet. My nemesis will be Umbridge herself, and my ally will be Hermione and I will be a Slytherin Weasley!!! (No hate for the Slytherin’s please, it’s where I was sorted into on Pottermore and after the initial devastation/self-doubt/what kind of person am I really DAY or so it took to recover from the shock, I slowly became proud of my Hogwarts house!) And I’m of magical descent and wealthy to boot! Whoot Whoot!!! And yet with all that apparent wealth, I find myself living in the Shrieking Shack of all places. Well you win some, you lose some 😀

A Little Inspiration!

Hello my lovelies, I’m so sorry for not posting this week, but between NaNoWriMo, some electrical issues at home, and a toothache from H*ll, I’ve just not been up for much lol. I’ll make sure I post some good stuff next week including the next installment of the Ratha James series 😀 But for today I figured I’d post some of my favorite inspirational memes and pictures I’ve been hoarding for my novels! So here we go:

Do you have any quotes, memes, or pictures that inspire you my lovelies? And how’s NaNo going for y’all (I’m not going to lie, I’m officially 2.5 days behind, but as I said before…toothache!)? Let me know! 😀

So Harry Potter, Aslan, Aragorn, and I…

Yesterday’s Daily Prompt caught my attention my lovelies and even though I’m a day late, I just had to write up a post for it! You get to spend a day inside your favorite movie. Tell us which one it is — and what happens to you while you’re there. See what I mean, it’s just too good to pass up! But deciding on just one movie is pure craziness — I mean right?! — so I have a few (and one TV series that still totally counts) that I’d like to spend a lifetime day in.

So in no particular order, here are my top picks:

1) Harry Potter (the whole series because again, picking just one would amount to unimaginable craziness) — Stepping into this series (movie or book) I would instantly make sure that I became the fourth bestie of the Dream Team, maybe I could be Harry’s long lost cousin from America (I think it could work). I’d get my own wand, learn a few spells, explore Hogwarts to my heart’s content (which will take a lot longer than one day but that’s beside the point), and hug all of my favorite characters. I’m looking at you Sirius Black. Then I’d have a serious (lol) heart to heart with Snape, tell the Weasleys how much I love them, and ask McGonagall how she became such a bada**!

2) Narnia (The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe/ Prince Caspian) — I’d hug Aslan. Nuff said.

3) The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit — Why yes I am combining all of those movies together, how nice of you to notice! Ok, first of all I’d go and give Samwise a hug, because really he freaking deserves it (and wow I just realized I plan on hugging ALOT of people…). Next stop is Rohan (where I like to think Faramir and Eowyn are living) for a nice chat and to check if Eomer needs a Queen because I am completely available and qualified for that role in life. Really. Queen Tara has a nice ring to it don’t you think? And after stopping in Gondor to visit Aragorn and Arwen I’d go back in time and chill with Gandalf, wink beckoningly at Thorin, and subtly maneuver Tauriel out of the equation because if Kili has a thing for tall women I am pretty much perfect for him.

And finally…

4) Downton Abbey — I would warn Matthew not to get in that freaking car!!! And tell them to take Sybil to the hospital ASAP!!! I’d slap Strallan for being an idiot, go dancing with Rose, and then I’d take tea in the library with the Dowager, the Countess, Isobel, and the Crawley sisters, thank you Carson.
